“I've seen paperdolls before, of course, but these go above and beyond. Famous Figures of Ancient Times: Movable Paper Figures to Cut, Color, and Assemble will buy you the time you need to share a story from days gone by while your children are busy cutting, coloring and putting together figures from the past. This is basically a hands-on activity book which is designed to attract children to learning more about the people who shaped the world as we know it. It is not a history book, although it does have a short blurb on the historical figures presented. Instead, it is a hefty book made of thick, sturdy pages of figures for children to cut out, color if they desire, and put together using mini brads or fasteners.”

"I’m also happy to find that my boys are still playing with their figures. Of course, being five years old, they both selected figures with swords so they can battle! But it’s great that they’ve taken an interest in history and love for me to tell them the name of each figure. For instance, they now know that a "hoplite" is a citizen-warrior of ancient Greece. (I didn’t know that!) Of course, there are hundreds, even thousands, of other figures that could have been included in this book (including some women), but this is a great start for getting kids interested in history with a project that is hands-on and creative."

"Cathy Diez-Luckie's Famous Figures of Ancient Times is the kind of book I would have enjoyed using when I was homeschooling. The soft cover book contains jointed paper doll-like figures printed on card stock. Each figure comes in two versions, one colored, one plain, so that children can color or paint their own. The costumes are historically accurate and based when possible on mosaics and sculptures. This volume contains figures from ancient Egypt through Augustine, including Hammurabi, Moses, David, Nebuchadnezzar, Aristotle, Julius Caesar and Jesus."

“Famous Figures of Ancient Times is a book of movable paper figures for kids who love history and costume. Cathy Diez-Luckie has taken a different approach to Tom Tierney's paper dolls by offering more interaction as well as brief descriptions of the important men (her literature indicates women will feature in future volumes) she depicts. I would have loved her book when I was a kid. I plan to purchase the upcoming dinosaur and animal books as well.
