“I've seen paperdolls before, of course, but these go above and beyond. Famous Figures of Ancient Times: Movable Paper Figures to Cut, Color, and Assemble will buy you the time you need to share a story from days gone by while your children are busy cutting, coloring and putting together figures from the past. This is basically a hands-on activity book which is designed to attract children to learning more about the people who shaped the world as we know it. It is not a history book, although it does have a short blurb on the historical figures presented. Instead, it is a hefty book made of thick, sturdy pages of figures for children to cut out, color if they desire, and put together using mini brads or fasteners.”

-- Carrie at ReadingtoKnow.com

“Great for kids who like crafts: detailed, colored figures from history, from Narmer to Augustine, to cut out and assemble. The figures are on cardstock with moveable joints. Good for decorating time lines or just for fun.”

--Susan Wise Bauer and Jessie Wise, authors of The Well Trained Mind (3rd Ed. W.W. Norton); Bauer also wrote several books on ancient history and on teaching history to children.

"I’m also happy to find that my boys are still playing with their figures. Of course, being five years old, they both selected figures with swords so they can battle! But it’s great that they’ve taken an interest in history and love for me to tell them the name of each figure. For instance, they now know that a "hoplite" is a citizen-warrior of ancient Greece. (I didn’t know that!) Of course, there are hundreds, even thousands, of other figures that could have been included in this book (including some women), but this is a great start for getting kids interested in history with a project that is hands-on and creative."

"These figures provide tactile learners an opportunity to manipulate figures from history and make what once was perceived as "boring" book learning into fun and games."

"...For those age 6 to 12, there’s another fun way of learning in Famous Figures of Ancient Times. Printed on strong card stock paper, it presents 20 historical figures, kings, philosophers, religious leaders, scholars, military leaders and one elephant in both pre-colored and color-them-in versions that can be cut out and assembled into moveable action figures. A brief biographical note is provided for each figure in the book. With crayons, colored pencils or paint, scissors, a 1/8 inch punch, and fasteners, easy to follow instructions will ensure hours of fun."

"What an awesome hands on approach to ancient history! Definitely worth purchasing for your homeschool library because you can make history lessons come alive through the use of 'paper dolls.' Helps kids visualize and relate to history. High quality cut-outs in color or in black and white for coloring.

--Lisa Barker, Jelly Mom, Children's Book Reviews

"Cathy Diez-Luckie's Famous Figures of Ancient Times is the kind of book I would have enjoyed using when I was homeschooling. The soft cover book contains jointed paper doll-like figures printed on card stock. Each figure comes in two versions, one colored, one plain, so that children can color or paint their own. The costumes are historically accurate and based when possible on mosaics and sculptures. This volume contains figures from ancient Egypt through Augustine, including Hammurabi, Moses, David, Nebuchadnezzar, Aristotle, Julius Caesar and Jesus."

-- Susan Olasky, WORLD Magazine, February 28,2009, Republished with permission of WORLD Magazine

"If you have a child who enjoys putting on plays or making moveable action figures, you HAVE to get this resource! The book includes 20 figures to cut, color and assemble. You can then use the figures to tell stories of ancient cultures including Ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece and Rome. A brief biographical note explains a little about each character to get you started. Cathy is a published airbrush artist and these figures are EXCEPTIONAL!"

-- Cindy Downes, Oklahoma Homeschool

“Cathy Diez-Luckie has produced absolutely the best supplemental activity book for history that I have seen. The moving figures are colorful, detailed, historically accurate – and just plain fun! I highly recommend it.”

-- Rob Shearer, Director, Schaeffer Study Center/Publisher, Greenleaf Press

“Famous Figures of Ancient Times is a book of movable paper figures for kids who love history and costume.  Cathy Diez-Luckie has taken a different approach to Tom Tierney's paper dolls by offering more interaction as well as brief descriptions of the important men (her literature indicates women will feature in future volumes) she depicts.  I would have loved her book when I was a kid.  I plan to purchase the upcoming dinosaur and animal books as well.
